I wasn’t sure what to expect when I got to the Promontory in Hyde Park for the event known as Tequila Tales. Once I got to the venue, the line was literally out the door. So, Im thinking to myself, “What have I stumbled upon? Is there free tequila? All the ladies are so pretty!”
“With Love We All Have A Story to Tell”
Tequila Tales is a gathering of upwardly mobile adults having discussions about relationships and the dynamics of those relationships while having a few drinks in between. This makes for extremely interesting and honest discussion that sparks insightful dialogue and provides perspectives that most times may not be shared in mixed company.
Isaac Paul, one of the creators and moderator of Tequila Tales, holds an iPad in one hand and a mic in the other and asks the audience questions throughout the evening. What makes this event so unique is that the audience is the expert. There is no panel providing instructions as to how we should maneuver during our relationships. This is a room of real people and real talk. This specific talk had a room of 250 plus. The subject of this Tequila Tales was “Falling on deaf ears, communication, when do you part ways or save the relationship?”
Questions like “Should a woman support her spouse while he follows his dreams, while she is the main breadwinner?” and “Is it better to be blunt when speaking your concerns and needs to your partner?” kept the room alive with energy and humor. Some of the opinions made a lot of sense and others not so much, When the subjects of money, sexual expectation and childrearing came up, the audience got very involved! The discussion was spirited and honest.
The Tequila Tales is sharing the story of Chicago with the world and is currently raising funds for The New Hip Hop, a documentary about love, the city, and The Tequila Tales that is helping to reclaim the narrative of the city of Chicago.
It is refreshing to be able to have these conversations in an open forum. It gives us an opportunity to learn more about ourselves and each other. Let’s keep these open discussions about love and relationships going. I will see you at the next Tequila Tales for sure — with a full bag of opinions.
