Jussie Smollett has been one of TV’s biggest LGBT faces ever since he came out of the closet earlier this year. And last night at the BET Awards, Smollett represented his community proudly when he spoke up in support of the Supreme Court’s same-sex marriage ruling.
As part of the “Empire” performance segment, Smollett hit the stage to perform “You’re So Beautiful,” and while the backing track repeated the famous line “this the kind of song that makes a man love a man,” Smollett gave a moving speech to the crowd about marriage equality.
“We live in a nation where freedom is what we represent, yet we are still fighting every day for the basic freedoms of all of our people,” he said. “Let the Supreme Court ruling be proof of how far we have come. Let the deaths of sisters and brothers be proof of how far we have to go. No one is free until we are all free.” He ended the performance with three simple words: “Stand for love.”
We applaud Smollett for supporting the SCOTUS decision, but he’s not the only one who supported it last night. See who else chimed in.
