Now that your new baby is here, you have a lot to think about: when to feed her, what to do when she cries and how to get your pre-baby body back.

If you started out at a healthy weight and gained the 25-35 pounds your doctor may have recommended, it may take just a few months to get back to your pre-pregnancy weight. However, if you were considered “overweight” prior to conception, or you put on more weight than your doctor advised, it could take much longer — up to a year — to get the weight off.

Needless to say, it’s important that despite how challenging weight loss can be at times, that you do get the weight off. In doing so, you reduce the chances of issues associated with obesity later on in life.

And although every new mom is eager to look like her old self again, it’s most important to be patient with yourself. Your favorite celebrity might have gone straight from the delivery room back into her size zero jeans, but she may also have had the assistance of personal chefs and celebrity trainers. As a mother who might be juggling work, motherhood and school, keep in mind that it is going to take time but that it is possible to drop the unwanted pounds.
