“Scandal” actress Kerry Washington recently partnered with the Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse initiative to bring awareness to financial abuse and domestic violence. Unlike domestic violence, financial abuse doesn’t leave a scar. But, it is often the main factor that keeps women in abusive relationships.
“Financial abuse is the hidden weapon. We don’t necessarily see it the way you would see a black eye. But, it is the number one reason women stay in abusive relationships. Even when they leave, it’s the number one reason why they go back,” Washington told TIME. “It’s very real in the lives of these women, whether it’s destroyed credit or losing a job or not being able to get to a job by losing transportation or access to cash.”
On Thursday night, Washington, 38, unveiled the clutch purse bearing the color of domestic violence awareness. The purple clutch is a symbol designed to give women back control of their own money. Last year, Washington teamed up with Allstate and raised $2.5 million from sales of another purse she designed. This latest design is also available at Saks.
On hand for Washington’s unveil were fellow celebs and close friends “Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts, Alicia Keys and AJ Calloway. For more snaps from Washington’s Purple Purse Campaign event, check out the gallery below:
