October was proclaimed National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1985. While the Susan G. Komen Foundation and several other national organizations have impacted our culture, the need remains for even more women to be encouraged to get mammograms on a regular basis, as early detection is the best prevention. The following celebrities have battled breast cancer, some allowing the public in to see their struggle with the disease from beginning to end and others revealed their struggles after they were in remission.

Robin Roberts  – The “GMA” news anchor was very public about her struggle with breast cancer in 2007 but champions early detection as the reason she is in remission today. Roberts’ illness resulted in additional complications but she is back on “GMA” as the picture of health today.
