Lupita Nyong’o joins Michaela Angela Davis in Harlem, receives surprise honor

Lupita Nyong'o

The Public Theater, New Heritage Theater Group and MIST Harlem came together to bring stunning Academy Award-winner Lupita Nyong’o to a packed Mist auditorium for “LUPITA NYONG’O in conversation with Michaela Angela Davis.”

The conversation that ensued was one of great humor combined with true depth of emotion. Nyong’o’s laser-focus on her work was evident in this conversation, as well as her desire to bring more stories of black women across the Diaspora to audiences here and abroad. She’s currently starring in “Eclipsed” at The Public Theater, a play showing the amazing human capacity as the play portrays a group of women who were forced to deal with the horrible conditions of torture, repeated rape and more during the Civil War in Liberia. She shared the pain she feels when portraying one of the women, but yet the joy she has in bringing their stories to life for audiences.

She’s a true inspiration for all of humanity, as she uses her gifts to create stories and perform for our enjoyment.

After the show, a proclamation from Congressman Charles Rangel was presented to Nyong’o declaring that Oct. 20 is officially “Lupita Nyong’o Day” in Harlem.
