Two days after Christmas, a 7-year-old girl lost her life after an argument over a man turned deadly in Detroit. According to The Detroit News, the incident occurred during a family gathering.
A man who has five kids by five different women decided to invite his new and old girlfriend to the family gathering. At some point, the women began yelling at each other and fighting over the man. Sharonda Benson, the man’s ex-girlfriend, grabbed a baseball bat and attempted to hit the new girlfriend with the bat. Benson, 23, wasn’t able to hit the man’s new girlfriend, but yelled that she would be back.
The man thought the disturbance was over and allowed two of his daughters, Chanell Berry and Ellen Garjo, to play with their Christmas toys. But Benson allegedly returned with a man and fired gunshots at the house. Berry, 7, and Garjo, 8, were both shot. Berry was shot in the left cheek, left ear and forearm, and succumbed to her wounds a short time later. She would have turned 8 years old next week. Garjo was shot three times, but she is expected to recover from her wounds.
It’s a senseless shooting that should’ve never occurred. Benson somehow thought that it would be a wise idea to fight over a man who had already moved on to another woman. She was holding on to a person who was incapable of properly giving her love. She will now likely spend the majority of her life behind bars.
Benson turned herself in to authorities shortly after midnight.
