According to numerous reports, Jada Pinkett Smith will return to Fox’s hit show “Gotham in the show’s upcoming second season.

The news may come as a bit of a surprise to fans of the series who may recall seeing Pinkett Smith’s character, Fish Mooney, appearing to drown to death in the waters of Gotham Harbor at the end of Season 1. In a bit of hand-tipping, showrunner Bruno Heller may have eluded to Fish’s imminent return in an interview with ComicBook.com shortly after season one when he told the website that death is rarely permanent for anyone in the series.

“Personally I’m still hoping that Jada will be back,” Heller said. “One of the problems of making a show like this is that you need actors who can really be big characters. You either have bigness or you don’t, and Jada is big in spades. She’s done a wonderful job for us and nobody dies forever in the DC Universe, necessarily, so I’m hoping whatever happens at the end of this season that Fish can and will be back.”

Thus far, details on Fish’s return are being kept under wraps, but speculation surrounding the series suggests she could possibly return in a few ways including through a number of flashbacks, having survived her apparent drowning, or even be having been brought to a lab to be resurrected.

One thing is for sure: no matter how Fish is reintroduced into the storyline, this season in Gotham looks to be one for the books.

Gotham’s second season kicks off Monday, Feb. 29.
