Ted Cruz, the only Republican candidate who may have a shot at the presidency other than Donald Trump, announced Carly Fiorina as his running mate today.
“This is a choice that you are telling the American people this is an individual who I trust and, even more importantly, this is an individual you can trust to lead this country no matter what might happen,” the Texas senator said of his pick while addressing the crowd at his Indianapolis campaign rally.
Cruz also added, “If you see a leader who deliberately surrounds themselves with people who are not capable, who are not informed, who are not skilled, and who would never, ever stands up to that leader, it tells you that leader is not a leader, but, rather, someone not at all secure in who they are.”
Fiorina was also a Republican presidential candidate, but dropped out after the New Hampshire primaries. As the only woman this election season who ran for the GOP ticket, she was known for oftentimes taking jabs at the only woman running for the Democratic ticket, Hillary Clinton. She seemed to see Clinton as her most threatening opponent, and even once told Fox News host Megyn Kelly that Cruz “cannot possibly beat Hillary Clinton.”
The former Hewlett-Packard CEO took quite a few shots at the senator during her campaign, once saying “he says one thing in Manhattan, he says another thing in Iowa, he says whatever he needs to say to get elected” during a CNN interview in January. But in March, she endorsed Cruz, hinting that he is the only one who can beat Trump.
“It is time to unite behind Ted Cruz,” Fiorina said at a Miami rally. “Other people in our party are kind of horrified by Donald Trump … Here’s the thing: We’re not going to beat Donald Trump by having our party tsk tsk over our voters. We’re going to have to beat Donald Trump at the ballot box.”
Cruz has recently lost to Trump in five primaries. The Indiana primary is on May 3 and the California primary takes place on June 7.
