New Orleans is mourning one of their own.
On Saturday, May 29, New Orleans Pelicans rookie guard Bryce Dejean-Jones was reportedly shot to death in Dallas, after entering an apartment he believed belonged to “an estranged acquaintance,” the manager of the apartment complex said in an email obtained by USA Today. However, the 23-year-old allegedly entered the wrong apartment — one allegedly belonged to his girlfriend — resulting in his death.
“After breaking in, the intruder was shot and later taken via ambulance to a local hospital,” Joshua Pool, a manager at the Camden Belmont located northeast of downtown Dallas, reportedly wrote. “Fortunately, no residents were injured.”
Meanwhile, police spokesman DeMarquis Black released a statement of his own to CNN, stating that the unnamed resident heard someone kick in his front door and “called out to the individual, but was not answered.” When Dejean-Jones allegedly forced open the resident’s bedroom door, he fired his gun. “There is no information that suggests the deceased Bryce Dejean-Jones knew the apartment resident, or was armed as he entered the apartment,” Black continued.
Shortly after, the Pelicans confirmed the sad news via Twitter, writing, “Please keep Bryce’s family and friends in your prayers during this difficult time.”
According to Dejean-Jones’ agent, Scott Nichols, the former USC basketball player died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, reports ESPN. Nichols also told CNN, that the budding athlete was in Dallas to celebrate his daughter’s first birthday. According to the agent, he believed that the apartment he was entering belonged to his girlfriend.
