New Orleans attracts thousands of partygoers every year eager to let loose and turn up in the world famous French Quarter, but like the old folks say, “If you’ve got time to party then you’ve got time to get your praise on in the church.” Truth be told, New Orleans has far more to offer than drunken nights on Bourbon Street. A large percentage of its rich culture stems from its spiritual roots. It is home to some of the oldest Black churches in the world. These are also some of the same spiritual institutions Africans enslaved in America used to escape their slave quarters on plantations for peace more than a century ago. The religious history is extremely sacred to New Orleanians and kept well preserved as a sign of respect.
