John Legend presents the debut trailer from Southside With You.
“The Haves and the Have Nots” star Tika Sumpter signed on to play Michelle Obama; while Parker Sawyers, best known for his work on Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Survivor (2015) and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit stars as the future POTUS, who takes a summer job at a Chicago law firm in 1989. There, he meets his boss, a young attorney named Michelle Robinson, who after some persistent wooing from Barack, agrees to spend the day with him on Chicago’s South Side.
While strolling through the Windy City — discussing their views on politics, participating in a little community service, viewing an art exhibit, and finally, catching a showing of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing — the pair find they have a connection — a love connection. After nightfall, they share both an ice cream cone and a kiss. That’s the gist of the film, Deadline reported shortly after the film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival.
Also starring in the film are Vanessa Bell Calloway, best known for her role as Eddie Murphy’s arranged wife in the 1988 cult comedy Coming to America and Jerod Haynes of Watch Dogs (2014), Animals (2014) and most recently, For the Cause (2013).
Although the Obamas have yet to comment on the film itself, not long ago, Tanne told Yahoo, “I’ve heard from pretty reliable second-hand sources that they are aware of the movie, that they are curious to see it, and also, I think, rightfully baffled that it exists.”
The Richard Tanne written and directed film (also executive produced by Legend) hits theaters on Aug. 26. In the meantime, check out a sneak peek above and tell us if you plan to see the film. Sound off in the comment section below.
