Chance the Rapper just keeps doing right. With so much negative news constantly trumpeting crime in Chicago, many see Chance as a promising beacon of light coming out of the city. He recently started the #BlackBoyJoy trend encouraging boys and men to shed the bravado and smile more often. Last week, he reclaimed 2K tickets from scalpers so his fans could afford to see his show. Last night, he opened his almost completely sold out Magnificent Coloring World Tour in San Diego. Leading up to the kick-off, he announced one more reason to come out and enjoy the show. Fans who attend the concert tour will have an opportunity to register to vote.
The popular Chicago rapper is partnering with the NAACP to encourage fans to register as part of a new campaign dubbed #staywokeandvote.
“Chance the Rapper is an artist whose music praises and lifts up our common humanity, and whose call for action speaks to the yearning of this moment,” said NAACP President Cornell William Brooks. “This year, more than it has in a generation, we must use the power of our voices and our votes and exercise our sacred right to vote.”
Chance has a history of backing political causes he believes in. Stephen Green, director of the NAACP Youth & College division, explained why he believed Chance was the right artist with whom to align.
“Chance the Rapper is a unique artist whose independence is a reflection of our millennial generation, who for the first time match the number of baby Boomers in the electorate,” Green said in a press release. “We’re pleased to join with Chance and the millions of young people who this year to become passionate activists and agents of change this year.”
In addition to registering voters, NAACP members will provide civic engagement resources and NAACP membership information to concertgoers. The registration drives will begin September 24 during the tour’s Chicago stop, and will continue through October 21.
