DJ Young Music is one of the most industrious, energetic, and passionate producer-DJs in the business. Besides being named the DMV’s crowned DJ at 18 years of age, this was also the age he signed a worldwide distribution deal with eOne. The beauty of his inner spirit is that even though he is reaching new plateaus and being given more responsibilities, he remains humble.
Currently, DJYM’s biggest announcement is “being the youngest to sign to a syndicated radio station that covers over 175 stations across the country.” What’s so fascinating is that a young man his age (19 currently) is able to mix urban music. This kid has a crazy ear for music, which covers a broad range as he is mixing the old with the new and creating beautiful music for a listening base of over 15 million people who are tuning in.
What’s next for you?
Getting signed to Superradio Networks in my mind means my work is just beginning. I have a lot of people relying on me to do big things and I aim to not let them down. Coming in on a platform of 15 million weekly viewers, my goal is to increase that to 30 million quickly. I’m on track to make that happen.
What has been one of the biggest highlights of your career?
I would say touring with Chris Brown and T.I. I felt so grateful that Chris Brown acknowledged my work and inquired about my availability to tour with him and be his DJ. I also would have to say deejaying for my idol Sean “Puffy” Combs’ launch party for Revolt TV.
Between running your own record label and recently producing and releasing the single by your artists Shade Jenifer (which I see debuted on Media Base charts at No. 5 alongside Rihanna, Drake and Jeremih). When is it that you get to sleep, young man? Seriously, how many hours of rest are you getting each day?
I don’t; I literally don’t sleep. At best I would say I average one hour of sleep. Stop looking at me like that!
I’m not happy about that. Today I need you to make a commitment to at least sleep 3-4 hours per day. Your body needs sleep to function so you can be around a long time to enjoy all the money you are going to be making now. Just because you are 19 doesn’t mean you are invincible. We need you here for a long time!
OK, I will promise I’m shooting for two hours from now on.
You started your career at 14. What was your drive and motivation to be successful?
I just wanted to make and have my own money. I was excited about being able to buy my own mixers and DJ equipment with my very own money. Being able to purchase exactly what I wanted and not having to ask anyone for anything is why I was willing to work so hard nonstop.
What’s the first thing a 14-year-old buys when he gets his first check?
It was a day I will never forget. I was able to walk into the store and purchase my first Gucci belt, I felt like I had finally arrived.
