The Soul Train Awards always highlight the best of R&B and soul music. This year’s awards ceremony, filmed at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, continues with tradition as Erykah Badu served as host in a ceremony that featured special performances by Teddy Riley, Brandy, Bobby Brown, BBD and Eric Benét. Here are the top five moments from the 2016 Soul Train Awards.
Erykah Badu as host
If you happen to follow Erykah Badu on social media, you have witnessed the soulful vegan’s witty sense of humor. She keeps the laughs going while addressing Donald Trump, Blacks in the future, and doing a hilarious bit with India Arie.
Tribute to Teddy Riley
Teddy Riley can be credited for creating his own subgenre of music. The New Jack Swing era engulfed top radio during the early 1990s. Riley gets his just due with a tribute that featured Bobby Brown, Doug E. Fresh and Guy.
Erykah Badu as performer
Along with hosting, Erykah Badu also took time to perform. She teamed up with D.R.A.M. for a sensual, and kind of creepy, performance of “Wi-Fi.” And, as previously noted, Badu and India Arie got together for an acoustic piece.
Brandy makes a comeback
Brandy proved that she can still command the stage while receiving the Lady of Soul Award. She performed past hits and brought out MA$E for “Sitting on Top of the World.”
Soul Cypher
In a play off of the hip-hop cypher from the BET Hip-Hop Awards, the Soul Cypher featured R&B artists such as Ne-Yo, Tyrese, Gladys Knigh, and Angie Stone.
The Soul Train Awards airs on BET and Centric at 8 p.m. EST on Nov. 27.
