For sure, 2016 has been an amazing year for Chance The Rapper. His commitment to his craft and strong stance on freedom and independence has catapulted him to superstar status. From releasing the critically acclaimed Coloring Book to garnering 7 Grammy nominations, Chance has broken new ground by his own merit this year in the world of Hip-Hop. On December 22, 2016, Lil Chano linked up with R&B crooner and fellow Chicago native Jeremih for a 9-track EP titled Merry Christmas Lil Mama. The EP is dedicated to Christmas, but of course certain unmentionables are mentioned throughout the project.
“All The Way” is dedicated to all the women who still want to get down on Christmas day. Hannibal Buress is featured on the track as he hilariously explains what Christmas means to him in an Auto-Tune pitched voice. While “Snowed In” follows the same Auto-Tune vibe that “All The Way” evokes, “Stranger At The Table” has the cadence of The Jackson 5’s, “I Want You Back.” Jeremih sings while Chance raps which lends the perfect balance of melody and bars on this project.
With a temperate lyrical approach Chicago gospel reared its holy head on “Joy”. “I’m Your Santa” sounds like a B-side cut from 2001 album, Invincible as Jeremih does his best Michael Jackson impression while Chance showcases the classic teach and repeat step instructions made famous by R. Kelly. “I Shoulda Left You” was produced by ATL maestro Zaytoven, and all it is missing is a guest verse from Gucci Mane.
“The Tragedy” is the merriest of ghetto gospels, while “Chi-Town Christmas” is the sing-songy Christmas song you expect to hear during Christmas time, minus the drums. On the last track “Merry Christmas Lil Mama,” Jeremih and Chance wrap up the project by wishing all of the women in the world a Merry Christmas.
