The past 13 days have been very rough on President Donald Trump because of his executive order barring the immigration of citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries and the public outcry that resulted. Now, Trump has decided it’s been so stressful that he is going to take a vacation this weekend in Florida.
This is a surprising move for Trump, who was very critical of former President Barack Obama and his decisions on when to take a vacation. Trump has been quoted as saying about Obama, “Well, the fact is, he takes more vacations than any human being I’ve ever seen. They used to complain about George Bush, but I understand he’s already exceeded George Bush and we’re not even through the year. So he likes vacation. Well, I mean, it sends a bad message. Here we have a country that really is going to hell in a hand basket. Let’s not kid ourselves. What’s happening to this country is horrible. All over the world, they’re talking about it. And we have a president that’s constantly — whether it’s Martha’s Vineyard or someplace else, constantly on vacation. I mean, all the time he’s on vacation! So I think it sends a very, very bad message. We have to work in this country to bring it back.”
Really, “hell in a hand basket”? In his first week in office, Trump caused havoc not only in the United States but around the world as thousands of refugees and travelers were stranded in countries and detained at airports. His rhetoric against Mexico and China have also ignited diplomatic turmoil and are the opening salvos of a trade war. He also authorized a military operation that resulted in the death of a U.S. Navy SEAL in the unofficial war in Yemen. Trump is willingly now grabbing the hand basket and picking the items for his picnic in hell.
