A domestic argument led to a deadly shooting that seemingly could have prevented by police in Sanford, Florida. On Monday, Allen D. Cashe, 31, was having a heated verbal exchange with his ex-girlfriend, LaTina Herring, 35, at a gas station involving him returning a set of keys to her home. The two were separated by a Sanford, Florida, police officer responding to the scene around 2 a.m. Monday, March 27.
The police were then called to Herring’s residence after the couple began arguing again about belongings in the home around 6 a.m. As the officer was talking with the couple a 911 call from a third party was received that stated Cashe was in possession of a gun. The officer questioned and searched Cashe and his vehicle and found no weapon and there was no reason to arrest him. In the presence of the officer, a bag containing Cashe’s belongings was given to him, inside that bag, which the officer did not search, was a gun. Cashe then walked away from the home and the police departed the scene. As soon as the scene seemed calm, Cashe returned, dressed in all-black, 15 minutes later and was seen by multiple witnesses with a gun. He then shot Herring, killing her and then shot Herring’s two sons Brendon, 7, and Brandon, 8, and Herring’s 60-year-old father.
Cashe then fled the area and shot and injured two innocent bystanders before being stopped by police and surrendering without further incident.
Cashe has a violent criminal history that seems especially directed at women. His record stretches back to at least 2010 and includes domestic violence against multiple former girlfriends, gun charges, drug charges and other incidents of assault. Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith told the media, “There is no way for us to predict what is going to take place. We did everything we believe is possible.”
