Morehouse College’s Dr. Tobe Johnson bestowed professor emeritus, Vulcan Award

Morehouse College presented degrees to more than 300 graduates on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at King Chapel. Also, Dr. Tobe Johnson, professor and chair of the Morehouse College Political Science Department retired after 59 years.

Johnson attended Morehouse at age 16, and that was the beginning of a more than 60-year-long relationship with the institution. He graduated Morehouse College with a B.A. in Political Science in 1954. He earned his Ph.D. in Government at Columbia University in 1963.


During a special presentation at Morehouse College’s 133rd Commencement Ceremony, Dr. Johnson was presented the Vulcan Award. The Vulcan Teaching Excellence Award goes to an outstanding professor who demonstrates strong academic skills in the classroom and provides leadership and support in other areas of campus life.

Following a fishing vacation to either Europe or Alaska, Dr. Johnson’s considering teaching political science part-time.
