Chicago Shakespeare Theater reimagining ‘Romeo and Juliet’ with actors of color

What appealed to you most in playing the role of Romeo?

Edgar Miguel Sanchez: What attracted me to Romeo are his profound thoughts on what it takes to have unconditional empathy in a world full of violence, in a culture of shame.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater‘s casting is showing diversity is important to theater companies, not only in Chicago but nationally. What do you think “The Bard” would think?

ES: The Bard wrote many characters, main characters, which were non-White … roles during the birth of modern slavery. I believe that if William Shakespeare were writing today, he’d be honored to share his gift with actors of color. I think Shakespeare knew the world is a far better place for everyone when it is shared and that diversity further highlights the human condition.

Romeo and Juliet runs through Dec. 22 at the Chicago Shakespeare’s Court Theater, 800 East Grand Ave.
