Leland B. Martin explores bisexuality, toxic masculinity in BET’s ‘Boomerang’

Outside of the show, you work with The Penny Lane Project. What type of work were you doing with the organization prior to the pandemic?

I work with them as a counselor. The children I work with have been through the system and have behavioral issues. I’d say I’m more like a big brother to kids that haven’t had much direction. I’m just trying to help and give back to young kids. I was young once, so it’s very rewarding to work with them.

It’s tough right now with the pandemic. You’re placed into these homes with people you don’t know. There’s less activity and there’s more time to get on each other’s nerves. Plus, there are little resources. I just donated some school supplies because it’s a crucial thing to have resources, especially now since there’s a lot of downtime. It’s not like they can go to school and escape their situation for a bit.

Lastly, apart from “Boomerang,” when we finally get back to some type of normalcy, what’s up next for you?

I have some commercial work that will be coming out soon, but mostly I’m waiting for things to get back to normal so I can get back to work. Our premier party was the last thing I went to before the quarantine.

“Boomerang” airs on BET Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. ET.
