Before DJ Spinderella became a world-renowned icon, she was a musically inspired student trying to make it in the Big Apple. The former Salt-N-Pepa member spoke with Thornwood High School students and supporters on Tuesday, Feb. 9 through an educational virtual Q-and-A workshop, which she co-hosted with Stanley Coleman Jr. Productions LLC. During the hourlong session, about 30 viewers tuned in to hear the emcee discuss how a high school romance helped spark her true passion.

Who gave you your first ever DJ break growing up?

My first DJ break would be my boyfriend at the time who was a DJ. I would help him with his parties, he would have parties in our community cent. I would just kind of help him with his stuff and I would get on and play around. And then I got the call because someone had heard that I was a DJ from the Salt-N- Pepa camp. I got the call that night from Hurby and he was like, “Would you come and audition?” I said, “yeah.” So the rest was her-story.

How often are you in Chicago?

These days, not very much, but Chicago has been exceptionally supportive of our career and of mine as a DJ. Unfortunately, the times wont allow me to get out there right now, but hopefully soon. I love Chicago. They’ve always been in my corner.
