“Lena Waithe has established herself as one of the most artistically and commercially successful creators and storytellers at work today,” added Jeff Harleston, Interim CEO of Def Jam.
“Lena has a profound understanding of and appreciation for music. After making her mark on television as an actor and writer, then smoothly shifting gears into her role as a film producer and CEO, it follows that she would now spread her wings at the helm of this exciting new record label. Def Jam is the perfect partner for Lena Waithe’s new Hillman Grad venture, and we look forward to bringing her musical vision to life,” Harleston concluded.
In related news, Waithe is executive producing the haunting new thriller “THEM” which premieres on Amazon Prime on April 9.
According to the show’s synopsis, “the limited anthology series explores terror in America. The first season, “COVENANT” centers around a Black family in the 1950s who move from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighborhood during the period known as The Great Migration. The family’s idyllic home becomes ground zero where malevolent forces, next door and otherworldly, threaten to taunt, ravage and destroy them.”
