Bril Barrett brings tap dancing full circle for national recognition

Why is the art form important?

Tap is the story of America and the story of African Americans at the same time. Tap is the testament of perseverance in the face of adversity. How else do you explain Peg Leg Bates? Tap has survived slavery, minstrel shows, blackface, Vaudeville, Jim Crow, civil rights and will contribute to the Black lives matter movement. Tap is important because it is our history, our legacy, and our story told through rhythm and movement. From Master Juba, King Rastus Brown, Bill ‘Bo Jangles’ Robinson, John Bubbles, Chuck Green, Lon Chaney, and Dr. Jimmy Slyde to Dr. Jeni LeGon, Consuela Harris, Edith ‘Baby Edwards’ Hunt, Harriet ‘Quicksand’ Brown, Cora La Redd, Lois Bright, and Mable Lee. These stories will inspire generations to come and that is why they must never be forgotten.
