Why did you want to see this project through?
I was in the first group of magnet school students in 1972 when they placed 12 Black and 12 White students together and began integrating the schools in Oklahoma. My company is One Tulsa, and our mission is to promote inclusion and diversity.
You are a descendant of this community. This must have been very personal for you. Please explain how you are connected.
It is very personal, I was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. My family has direct ties to Black Wall Street prior to 1921 and I grew up as a member of Vernon Chapel AME Church on Greenwood [Avenue] and my cousin’s twins, William and Wilbert Tecumseh, owned Tecumseh’s Barber Shop on Greenwood.
How is the city of Tulsa moving forward after rediscovering this tragedy?
This unfortunately is a very sensitive process for the city of Tulsa and progress has been very slow other than recognition of the event, not much else has been done.
