Philadelphia native Dana L. Banks currently serves as special assistant to the president and senior director for Africa at the National Security Council. Banks joined rolling out to share how the U.S. is helping African countries with COVID relief. 

What is the United States doing to raise Africa’s 1% vaccination rate?


The United States is committed to bringing the same urgency to international vaccination efforts that we have demonstrated here at home. We are working to get as many safe and effective vaccines to as many people around the world as possible, includ[ing] the African continent. For the past 2-3 weeks we have been rolling out some five million vaccine doses to the African continent and we’ve been doing this through our partners, through the African Union. Today, over five million doses of the Pfizer vaccine are on the way to South Africa alone. Also, we will be sending four million doses of Moderna vaccines to our brothers and sisters in Nigeria to help them to deal with the effects of the pandemic.
