“Black talent should see us as ‘the beginning,’ their first stop, if they even do press. I consider interviewing Kevin Hart a full circle moment, because of our history — he would never have done this interview years ago. I’ve been on the industry’s neck about how the industry treats Black media. I heard Lena Waithe just fired her publicist over at ID PR. She’s never been on my show, but every time I see her, I tell her I want her on the show and she says to set it up with Jill and Jill never sets it up. I keep telling all these Black celebrities [that] these White women, these White folks don’t work for you, they work for themselves, and as long as they can book you on ‘E!’ and ‘Entertainment Tonight’ they’re fine, but once that check stops they aren’t going to have any more use for you.”
Lee’s new season of “Hollywood Unlocked” is a partnership with Fox Soul and the guests are among Hollywood’s best and brightest.
“I’m at a point where I talk to who I want to talk to and I enjoy good conversation. … Today I’m looking for conversations that inspire and are interesting, but it has to be something I want to do,” Lee says.
Lee is looking forward to taking the platform to even greater levels but says he will never sell out because ownership is key in keeping his platform authentic.
