Ramona Burress shares her breast cancer journey

Who’s your tribe or your system? Besides the support and the laughter?

I think that sister, girlfriend, tribe that you’re in, has been helpful because we all sit in different spaces, but we go through some of the same life challenges, and we’re coming from some of the same starting places. I really implore the women who are listening to us today, to stay strong. Right now is the time for us to fight. It sucks. That is 2022. We have to fight, but there’s a fight to be had. But when I think about some of my darkest days, you know where I’m like, “Whoa [is] me.” Because to tell the audience here, I was given a termination date. 2018 was the year that I was supposed to expire. And it’s now 2022. But when I think about the dark days, it’s my kids, they give me hope.

What are three things you would tell women about breast cancer from your experience?

Know your body and know what’s normal. If you feel something that’s not normal, contact your health care provider, whether it’s your primary care physician, whether it’s the MP that you see at the local clinic, reach out and say, “Hey, something doesn’t feel right.” Two, it’s important for us to keep in mind that we have to listen to the advice of our physicians and clinicians who are guiding us in this space, but know that there are larger powers out there too. And remember who you are, take time for yourself.
