Charles L. Chavis Jr. gives a history lesson in his new book

What should we take away from this particular body of work?

I think the main takeaway of this book is going to be about the power and resiliency of the Black people, and of our community, [despite] of all of the things that have happened to us historically, and throughout the history of this country, specifically, with this lynching, we still are resilient, and we’re still alive and fighting and living to do the tale. I think we also have to recognize that our stories are disappearing for whatever reasons, we know. As I mentioned earlier, most institutions, archival institutions and repositories, and government records, organizations, they’re just not in the business of preserving and taking care of our records. And we have to recognize that, so I think we also have to, as people, begin to really honor, value and learn how to salvage our stories, our history, sitting down talking with grandparents and others before they move on.
