Kaufman was immediately intrigued by the script’s complexity as her character navigates her sister’s death while embracing love.
“That deep pain that kind of comes from life experiences to then experiencing love for the first time — those are all just universal parts of the human experience that everybody feels at some point,” Kaufman explained.
Colimon added the opportunity to immerse himself in a versatile character who falls in love drew him to the film.
“I think that this character spoke to me right out the gate, because here you were with somebody that’s a multi-hyphenate,” said Colimon, who is also a poet in real life. “The musicianship of the role was really something that spoke to me immediately. But to add Josephine Decker to have in the mix, bringing her theatrical artistry to the project, it was really something special.”
