Danielle Brooks and Sterling K. Brown have earned Academy Award nominations.
Brooks got her Oscar nod in the Actress in a Supporting Role category for the musical remake of the 1984 classic film The Color Purple. Brown is getting his nod in the Actor in a Supporting Role for his role in the gripping comedy drama, American Fiction.
The Color Purple was stained by the controversy that erupted after principal star Taraji P. Henson publicly complained about inadequate accommodations on the set and substandard pay — despite having mega-media mogul Oprah Winfrey as one of the producers. Music maven Quincy Jones also backed the film. The studio, in turn, blamed Henson for The Color Purple being a commercial flop.
The original film, directed by Steven Spielberg, was nominated for 14 Academy Awards at the 1985 event but failed to earn a single Oscar trophy. Brooks hopes that will change nearly four decades later.
The 2024 Oscars will take place at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 10 at 7 p.m. EST. Comedian and late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel will host the prestigious proceedings for the second consecutive year and fourth time emceeing overall.
