Though Khalilah Yasmin has been a successful model with runway, billboard, print, and television appearances under her belt, the Las Vegas-based renaissance woman found her niche as a prolific author, having released seven books to date. A born writer with a penchant for storytelling, Yasmin has served as editor-in-chief of Vertical Art and Fitness Magazine, and she hosts a popular online blog for poetry, short stories, observations, and random witticisms. She is also putting the finishing touches on her debut screenplay and developing other long-form works.
How did you know that you were supposed to be an author?
According to my mother, I was writing when I was two before I could even spell. I would read my scribbles to anyone willing to listen. I still have some of my writings as far back as 1st grade. I don’t know if I knew I was “supposed” to be an author. But I know I’m supposed to share my stories since it’s part of my spirit to do so.
Tell us all about your recently released books.
Letters Never Sent is a collection of poetry and the fourth published poetry book of my seven books. I included pieces from several years that are inspired by life and my own vivid imagination.
Redwoods is a science-fiction thriller with a twist, unlike my other two thrillers, which are fantasy and psychology-based. This time, I wanted to follow the characters from a different type of journey and include more science-fiction elements to keep the readers guessing.
What are some of the pros and cons of self-publishing?
Pros: I purchased 10 of my own ISBNs (International Standard Book Numbers) back in 2004 and am my own publisher. By being my own publisher, I own the rights to my book as the author and the publisher. Prince used to say it is important for an artist to own their own work.
Cons: I am my own publisher, so with a limited budget, it’s up to me to get my book out there. Doing everything yourself is rewarding yet has its own set of frustrations and limitations. Getting the word out about the book means it’s up to me to really promote it. As an introvert who cringes upon the thought of “bothering” people, it is challenging to do that at times.
Advice for aspiring writers?
You only live once. Stop waiting for the perfect moment. … Write while your hands still have strength. Write while your mind is still full of ideas and wit. Write because you want to tell a story for you.
What’s next for Khalilah Yasmin?
I’m already formulating the plot for my next thriller. Reaching out to some universities to perform some of my poetry there. Getting my books sold in some local bookstores here in Las Vegas. This time, I’ll actually do a book signing as well. My voice and poem are currently featured in the live Las Vegas Chippendales show. I’d like to get more of those opportunities as well. One day, I plan to see my name on the big screen and on Netflix, based on a novel by Khalilah Yasmin. I believe Matador will be the first one there.
