Democracies from around the world have come together to fight back against disinformation campaigns.

James Rubin, the special envoy for non-state propaganda and disinformation efforts at the US State Department’s global engagement center, has confirmed that the US, the UK and Canada have already committed themselves to the drive, which is geared towards protecting the public from disinformation campaigns by foreign governments.

“Now is the time for a collective approach to the foreign information manipulation threat that builds a coalition of like-minded countries committed to strengthening resilience and response to information manipulation.” the framework says.

The US, the UK and Canada hope that other countries will follow their lead in the coming weeks.

The efforts come ahead of the US election later this year when Joe Biden will run for a second term in the White House.

Meanwhile, London Mayor Sadiq Khan recently warned of the dangers of AI deepfakes.

The 53-year-old politician faced lots of online abuse after a fake audio clip of him appeared on social media.

“You know, we did get concerned very quickly about what impression it may create. I’ve got to be honest, it did sound a lot like me,” Khan said during an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s “Why Do You Hate Me?” podcast.

Khan’s family were also upset by the controversy.

“When you’ve got friends and family who see this stuff, it’s deeply upsetting. I mean, I’ve got two daughters, a wife, I’ve got, you know, siblings. I’ve got a mom.” he shared.
