Jabbar Williams has grossed over $2 million with Amazon Relay and over 80,000 impressions on his social media with his high-grossing recession-proof passive income method. He shares his knowledge of real estate and transportation but suggests future entrepreneurs do their due diligence before jumping into trucking or real estate.
More people of color have been entering the trucking business since the pandemic. What professional characteristics are needed to be successful in trucking?
In this business, you need to possess drive and the ability to pivot and think outside of the box as changes are inevitable. Like any industry, there are always changes happening so a person will need to be abreast of these changes. That leads me to another important characteristic; become obsessed with the industry you are in by continuously being a student. Researching and studying my industry to improve my craft and knowledge was key in the beginning and now.
What is the difference between the business model of a box truck and a commercial 18-wheeler?
Some of the major differences between a box truck and a commercial 18-wheeler is the licensing and compliance requirements. With a box truck, all that is needed is a regular driver’s license to operate the truck. This makes it easier to find and hire drivers as most people do possess a regular driver’s license. In addition, there are no special certifications or school required unless a person opts to use a CDL type of box truck and/or if they are interested in hauling specially certified cargo/materials like hazmat materials. With an 18-wheeler, you do have to attend CDL school to obtain the CDL license. To obtain it, you must pay to attend CDL school to get the training to properly operate such trucks like the 18-wheeler. In addition, the compliance portion will require such drivers to enter the alcohol consortium as outlined by FMCSA.
What advice would you give someone who wants to start a business and is considering real estate or ground transportation?
Stick to the formula! If the formula worked, then repeat that same formula. In addition, in both real estate and logistics, I highly recommend seeking out and investing in a mentor. As I stated before, not only will you learn from their mistakes but you gain a wealth of knowledge that will help fast-track your success. If you are trying to decide between which of the two industries to start out, I would suggest you enter logistics first. The reason I suggest that path first is because of the low entry cost to get started in comparison to real estate.
What do you do to build upon your financial success?
Mentor, mentor, mentor! Financial success in everything I did from real estate to logistics, all started out by investing in a reputable mentor! It saved me costs, it got me into rooms, and it helped me see my financial success a lot sooner had I just done it on my own. In addition to having a mentor, I became obsessed with the industry. I am a student of my craft. I studied and researched everything and grew my logistics business from a combination of both.
