Tell us about yourself.

I am dedicated to the profession and completed my CPA certification before I graduated with my bachelor’s degree from Governor’s State University. I have 30 years of experience as a CPA and 32 years as a tax professional. I excel in providing personalized financial services to small and medium businesses alike. My passion lies in empowering individuals and businesses through financial literacy and tailored solutions.

What was the vision for your business?

The vision was to create a financial services firm that not only addresses the tax and accounting needs of businesses and individuals but also empowers them through financial education and tailored consulting, allowing them to grow and expand their businesses.

How would you describe your brand?

S.D. Hodges & Associates is a client-centric, comprehensive financial services brand dedicated to integrity, empowerment and personalized solutions in financial management.

Is there a backstory?

The firm evolved from my deep-seated commitment to financial literacy and extensive experience in accounting, aiming to offer more than just tax preparation but a partnership in financial growth.

Was it a deliberate decision or a gradual and natural evolution to start a business?

Starting the business was a deliberate decision driven by me. I had my first real business at the age of 13, cleaning homes. I cleaned two houses a week through high school because I didn’t want to babysit or work in fast food. I made $40 per week in the late ’70s, which was a lot of money for a kid back then. I wished that someone had taught me to manage my money at that time — I would be a millionaire now. This created a desire to learn and leverage my expertise in a way that would provide more comprehensive and personalized financial services.

What key skills or qualities make you unique as an African American leader?

I have unique qualities, including my extensive experience, deep commitment to community empowerment, and ability to provide tailored financial solutions that resonate with diverse client needs.

What is your commitment to the community?

I am committed to financial education, collaborating with banks and professional services to provide workshops and resources for business growth and individual financial literacy.

How important is technology in day-to-day operations?

Technology is crucial for efficiency, accuracy and providing up-to-date financial services in today’s fast-paced business environment.

How do you utilize technology in your business?

Technology is utilized for streamlined tax preparation, financial reporting, secure client communication and staying abreast of the latest financial regulations and trends.

What’s next for the business?

Future plans include expanding our business to include an outsourced CEO, CFO, and COO program utilizing the talents of some well-respected individuals in the field. We are also incorporating more advanced technological tools and deepening community engagement and commitment through educational programs.

What advice would you give to those wanting to start a business?

I would advise aspiring entrepreneurs to have a clear vision, seek knowledge, consult with an attorney and CPA, be adaptable and remain committed to integrity and client service excellence.
