The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery is set to honor the legacy of James Baldwin, one of the most pivotal figures in American literature and civil rights activism, with a special exhibition titled “This Morning, This Evening, So Soon: James Baldwin and the Voices of Queer Resistance.” Curated by Rhea L. Combs, in collaboration with Hilton Als, the exhibition marks the centennial of Baldwin’s birth and explores his profound impact on society.

Exploring Baldwin’s multifaceted legacy

The exhibition delves into Baldwin’s contributions across various fields, including art, music, film, literature, and activism. It features works by notable artists such as Lyle Ashton Harris, Richard Avedon, and Faith Ringgold, highlighting Baldwin’s interactions with figures like Nina Simone and Lorraine Hansberry. The display aims to present a comprehensive view of Baldwin’s influence, particularly focusing on his advocacy for the LGBTQIA+ community and his exploration of complex social themes.

Themes and inspirations

According to Combs, the exhibition was inspired by the 2019 showcase “God Made My Face: A Collective Portrait of James Baldwin” by Hilton Als. It aims to challenge perceptions of portraiture by intertwining Baldwin’s image with those who influenced and were influenced by him. The exhibition not only celebrates Baldwin’s literary genius but also his role as a cultural and queer icon, reflecting on his enduring relevance in today’s social landscape.

Legacy and impact

James Baldwin’s work remains a beacon of truth and artistic integrity. The exhibition underscores his role in articulating the complexities of identity, race, and sexuality, which continues to inspire artists and activists today. As we witness a resurgence in Baldwin’s recognition, this exhibition is a timely homage to his enduring legacy and the diverse voices he championed.

The National Portrait Gallery’s exhibition, running from July 12, 2024, through April 20, 2025, offers a unique opportunity to revisit the profound insights and contributions of James Baldwin. It invites audiences to reflect on his life’s work and its impact on contemporary society, ensuring his legacy continues to enlighten and inspire future generations.
