Why Trae Young’s AAU star MacKenzie Mathurin committed to Michigan (video)

Mathurin gives ‘rolling out’ an exclusive reaction

ATLANTA – MacKenzie Mathurin has decided to take her talents to the University of Michigan. The 5-foot-10 guard out of Oklahoma announced her decision on Aug. 7 at Overtime Select during halftime of the All Knighters’ 87-52 win. Her top five programs she considered were also Alabama, Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Oklahoma University.

In the first half, Mathurin showcased her skills from shooting to running the floor, getting in passing lanes and becoming creative on offense.

During the summer, Mathurin is a star player on Team Trae Young, owned by the NBA superstar who shouted-out Mathurin’s decision.

“My next star is off the board,” Young posted on X. “Congrats, [Mathurin].”

After the decision, Mathurin spoke to rolling out about the decision.

What went into your decision to commit to Michigan?

The feeling I got when I talked to the coaches when I first reopened my recruitment. My phone was blowing up, and I don’t remember many of those conversations, but I remember talking to coach [Kim Barnes] Arico, and how our conversation went so smoothly. We just talked about the game.

Michigan has always been in the back of my mind, even at the very beginning. Then, I knew if I was going to go to the Big 10, I was going to Michigan. I went on campus on an official [visit], and that was just amazing. They checked all my boxes, and after that, I just knew.

What was it like getting recruited in the seventh grade?

It was pretty fun. I got my first offer from OU and Sherri Cole. Just from that experience, I was lying on my bed, I didn’t even know what was happening. My mom was with me, and just hearing Sherri Cole tell me I had an official offer from Oklahoma was amazing. Then, it started flowing in ever since then.

So it’s been such a fun experience. I know most girls don’t get to experience what I’ve gotten to, so I’m grateful.

You showed a little flash in your game tonight, reminiscent of the guy who owns your AAU team, Trae Young. Who are some players who influence your game?

My mom. She’s really taught me everything I know, and she set me up for greatness just by being with great trainers throughout my life. Kenny Curry and Austin Wright, they’ve taught me my game.

[And] just learning from watching online and watching games. I know Team USA is playing right now. I’ve loved watching them. Learning from other players, really online. I work on my game so much.
