ESPN’s popular debate show, “First Take,” is set to broadcast live from Howard University on Sept. 20, 2023. This exciting event marks the beginning of the show’s initiative to travel to various HBCUs across the country.
What to expect
Featuring renowned sports personalities Stephen A. Smith, Shannon Sharpe and Molly Querin, “First Take” will film on the iconic “Yard” at Howard University. This special episode coincides with the Truth and Service Classic Weekend, just a day before the highly anticipated football game between the Howard Bison and the Hampton Pirates.
Bringing energy to HBCUs
Dave Roberts, ESPN’s executive vice president, expressed the network’s commitment to showcasing HBCUs. He highlighted Howard’s rich history and significant contributions to the Black community as key reasons for selecting the university as a broadcast location.
Engaging with students and alumni
In addition to the live broadcast, ESPN plans to host an event for Howard students interested in careers in sports and media. Kery Davis, the Athletics Director at Howard University, emphasized the importance of this opportunity. He added that the event would allow students, alumni and staff to experience the live production up close.
Future stops on the tour
After the Howard University broadcast, “First Take” will continue its journey to other HBCUs, including Tennessee State University on Oct. 11 and Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College on Nov. 8. This initiative aims to foster a deeper connection with HBCU communities and celebrate their unique cultures.
