Whoopi Goldberg insists her fashion philosophy isn’t that deep. Her candid approach to personal style has been consistent throughout her career in entertainment.

The 69-year-old star has opened up about her fashion sense and explained that she has a very simple outlook on the clothes she wears. This refreshingly honest perspective comes at a time when celebrity fashion choices are increasingly scrutinized on social media platforms.

She told PEOPLE magazine her approach isn’t complicated. Her straightforward style contrasts with many celebrities who work with stylists and follow strict fashion guidelines for public appearances.

If it fits and it’s comfortable, she puts it on. This practical philosophy has guided Goldberg’s distinctive style choices throughout her career, from red carpet events to her daily appearances on television.

The ‘Sister Act’ star previously admitted her feelings were hurt after she was ridiculed for her 1993 Academy Awards outfit. That particular Oscars ceremony was a significant moment for Goldberg, who was presenting awards following her own Best Supporting Actress win for “Ghost” in 1991.

She was met with titters and a wave of criticism for donning an out-there look that consisted of a purple and green bedazzled jumpsuit with a long, poofy purple jacket with a bright green lining at the Oscars. Fashion critics at the time were particularly harsh, with some publications including the outfit in their “worst dressed” lists.

Back in 2023, she revealed it impacted her style confidence for years afterwards. This admission highlights the lasting psychological impact that public criticism can have, even on established entertainment figures with decades of career success.

She told Page Six Style that it kept her from dressing up for a very long time. Fashion psychologists note that negative feedback about personal style choices can significantly affect self-expression and confidence.

She reminded people that in those days, critics would say things that made her wonder if she really looked ridiculous. This reflection demonstrates how media commentary shaped celebrity behavior before the social media era, when criticism was primarily delivered through magazines and television programs.

Whoopi added the outfit was inspired by one of her comedy icons, ‘I Love Lucy’ star Lucille Ball and her great ensembles she wore on set of the groundbreaking 1950s sitcom. Ball was known for her bold fashion choices both on and off screen during television’s golden age.

Lucy would always come out in these great ensembles, and she thought she would like to wear that. Green is not a color she would normally wear, so she decided to try it. This tribute to a comedy pioneer reflects Goldberg’s appreciation for entertainment history and those who paved the way for her own success.

When asked if she stood by her choice, Whoopi said absolutely. This unapologetic stance represents her commitment to authenticity in an industry often defined by conformity and trends.

‘The View’ star has previously spoken about the importance of wearing what makes you happy while slamming ageism in fashion commentary. As a co-host on the popular daytime talk show since 2007, Goldberg has consistently advocated for personal expression regardless of age or conventional standards.

She told InStyle magazine in 2019 that people will always say to somebody young that they’re dressing so old, and they will say to an older woman that they’re dressing too young. Fashion experts have noted that age-based criticism disproportionately targets women, especially those in the public eye.

The clothes that they made, you could be 21 and wear it, you could be 65 and wear it, you could be whatever age you are and look good in it. And feel good in it. You’re not too old to wear anything that makes you happy. That’s the key. The only important voice, ever, is your own. This statement came during the promotion of her clothing line, which emphasized inclusive sizing and ageless design principles.

Throughout her career, Goldberg has worn everything from designer gowns to casual streetwear, always prioritizing personal comfort over trends. Her EGOT status has given her the freedom to define success on her own terms, including through her distinctive personal style choices.

Goldberg continues to be an advocate for authenticity in fashion, encouraging people of all ages to dress for themselves rather than for critics or social expectations. Her enduring influence spans beyond acting and hosting into areas of personal expression and style independence.
