Kanye West’s former Malibu home is up for sale again. The oceanfront property has become one of the most talked-about listings in California’s luxury real estate market this year.
Just six months after the controversial rapper sold his 4,700-square-foot beachfront house at a huge loss for $21 million, it is back on the market for $30 million. This represents a potential profit for the current owner if they achieve their asking price.
Designed by the renowned Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the iconic home was purchased by Kanye in 2021 for a huge $57.25 million. Ando is known for his minimalist aesthetic and use of concrete, having designed notable buildings worldwide including the Church of the Light in Japan and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
He then proceeded to remove the windows and gut the interior of the property, before abandoning his renovation plans and putting it back on the market, where it sold for $21 million six months ago. The extensive demolition significantly reduced the property’s value from his original purchase price.
Realtors Amanda Lynn and Dylan Eckardt of are listing the property, with Eckardt telling Variety: “This is one of the bigger listings for me and Amanda together. I’m gonna sell it this time to a great collector who wants to finish a masterpiece.” Luxury beachfront properties in Malibu often attract high-profile buyers, with the area being home to numerous celebrities and business moguls.
Lynn shared on Instagram: “New Exclusive! $30,000,000. Seize this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a masterpiece designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando. This architectural gem, formerly owned by Kanye West, was originally purchased for $57.3 million. Now listed at $30 million, this exclusive offering by Amanda Lynn invites you to experience unparalleled minimalist luxury. 24844 Malibu Rd, Malibu, CA 90265. Now available. Contractor Tony Saxon carried out much of the demolition work for Kanye and previously told The New Yorker: “It’s funny – and not funny, in a way – to say, ‘I’m the man who single-handedly destroyed this architectural masterpiece.’ But I pretty much did.” Saxon later became involved in legal disputes related to the renovation project.
West reportedly wanted to turn the house into a retro bomb shelter, and as a result the kitchen, bathrooms, windows, light fixtures, heating and air conditioning were all removed, while power and water was cut. This unconventional vision for the property was part of West’s broader interest in alternative architectural concepts that he has explored in recent years.
The concrete structure still maintains its striking exterior design, which features Ando’s signature clean lines and minimalist approach. Property experts suggest that completing the renovation properly would require substantial investment, depending on the level of luxury finishes selected by the new owner.
Malibu’s Carbon Beach, where the property is located, is often referred to as “Billionaire’s Beach” due to the concentration of wealthy homeowners in the area. The location is considered one of the most prestigious residential stretches of coastline in the United States.
Despite its current gutted state, the property offers outdoor space and direct beach access, features that are highly coveted in the luxury real estate market. The three-story building offers Pacific Ocean views and was originally completed in 2013, making it one of the few Ando-designed residences in the United States.
Real estate analysts suggest that the property’s association with both West and Ando creates a unique marketing opportunity, potentially attracting buyers interested in architectural significance, celebrity provenance, or both. The current listing emphasizes the opportunity to complete Ando’s vision rather than focusing on the controversial renovation history.
The Malibu property market has remained resilient despite economic changes, with demand for premium beachfront homes continuing to attract wealthy buyers. Industry experts predict that even with the substantial renovation requirements, the property could attract significant interest from architectural enthusiasts and luxury home collectors.
