George Zimmerman made his first appearance in a Florida court room today, the day after he was charged with killing Trayvon Martin.

As previously reported, special prosecutor Angela Corey charged the 28-year-old with second-degree murder in the February shooting death of the unarmed 17-year-old boy.

Zimmerman appeared in court this afternoon where he stood quietly as the judge read instructions to his lawyer.

Zimmerman barely spoke and only uttered the words “Yes sir” in response to the judge’s questions.

The presiding judge did not recognize the defendant at first and told O’ Mara “Sorry I didn’t recognize him next to you” before asking Zimmerman if he knew his Constitutional rights.

Zimmerman’s official arraignment will be held May 29. O’Mara has said that his client will plead not guilty.
