Hornets’ Tyson Chandler on Lil Wayne, Blogging, and Being Traded

NBA star Tyson Chandler is more than the New Orleans Hornets center who dominates inside the paint. Recently, Chandler was the center of attention during a one-day trade process, marking the transaction as one of the fastest in NBA history. Chandler was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder and then was traded back to the Hornets in one day after failing a physical. The back-and-forth shuffle between the teams would be frustrating for some, but Chandler’s performance henceforth proves he did not let the process affect his game. Chandler discussed with rolling out sports just how to overcome minor setbacks. –ks

How did the trading process affect you or your game?

Fortunately, it was kind of a quick turn around for me and it wasn’t as difficult as it could’ve been. I think the biggest part is that families have to deal with the question. But far as basketball, I don’t think I lost a step.

The league has made some adjustments by requiring players to complete at least one year of college ball before entering the draft. However, you came straight out of high school before this rule. Do you think you were you ready for the NBA?

I definitely felt like any other rookie, except … guys in college have a little more experience [as] far as being away from home and understanding what it takes. It took a little longer for me to adjust.

What inspired you to get involved with the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Skills Challenge program geared toward encouraging children with asthma to participate in sports?

For kids to understand that they can accomplish whatever they want to. A lot of times you have parents [and kids] not really understanding what asthma really is. You don’t want that to detour them from doing what they want to do.
