Today, we celebrate Dr. Maya Angelou. Although the cherished poet passed away last May at the age of 86, her words and accomplishments will forever live on. A beloved author, dancer, actress, singer, and civil rights activist, best known for her 1969 memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Angelou has touched many lives over-the-years. First to become an African-American woman non-fiction bestseller, Angelou leaves behind a wonderful legacy, including being awarded the Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album in 1994.
In addition to a long list of writer’s awards, the NAACP appointed Angelou as an American Ambassador and President Barack Obama presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom to her in 2010. On April 7, Angelou will be honored with her very own Postal Forever Stamp by Oprah Winfrey at the Warner Theater in Washington, D.C. In honor of Angelou’s life, let’s remember some of her most courageous words.
