The Steed Society Gives Back Through Mentoring Program at Jack Yates

The Steed Society, Inc., is a 501c3 organization with a mission to empower the community through motivational, educational and cultural initiatives. More specifically, it works to empower women and youth through various programs such as Female Success Factor business seminars, the Top 25 Women of Houston, Seeding Minds children’s literacy program and the Junior Youth Initiative mentoring program.

The Steed Society, Inc., Junior Youth Initiative mentoring program is for female, high school juniors advancing to their senior year.  The program encompasses volunteerism, mentoring and leadership training from the Top 25 Women of Houston alumni.  Alumni include such women as Dr. Deavra Daughtry, Joi Beasley, Kim Roxie, Melanie Lawson, Dr. Camille Cash, Dr. Reagan Flowers, Deborah Duncan, Judge Hilary Green, Lora Mayes, Kandi Eastman and Minister Mia Wright.

The first two workshop sessions were held on Saturday, June 11, and Saturday, June 18, at Jack Yates High School.  The first workshop session was lead by Top 25 Women Joi Beasley and Dr. Reagan Flowers, who discussed the importance of leadership skills.  The second session focused on college planning with Michael Clark and entrepreneurship with Top 25 Woman Kim Roxie.  Future sessions will focus on such things as social media skills, etiquette and financial literacy.

The mentoring program opens up windows of possibilities for the young ladies and imparts knowledge, leadership and social skills. It also provides a helping hand to aid participants in identifying their potential, learning their strengths and guiding them to future success. –kim floyd
