The hosts of Black Girls Rock! — Regina King and Tracee Ellis Ross — made no qualms about letting it be known that the stage for BGR is reserved for women. However, if they did decide to make an exception and invite a man on stage, Ross emphasized that she would get pretty excited about it. Well, a man was welcomed onto the stage, and yes, the audience got pretty excited when Will Smith walked out.
Smith shared a personal moment with the audience. He recounted that about a year ago around 6 a.m. he was in the bed with Jada. (Get your minds out the gutter! He absolutely kept it PG.) He was gazing at Jada as she was slept and he received a Google alert. The tagline attached to his name read,“Jada Pinkett Smith files for divorce from Will Smith.” He said he tried to wake up Jada, but to no avail. She kept telling him to let her sleep. He said he kept tapping her to ask, “baby, baby, where were you yesterday? You know the 20 minutes I couldn’t find you? Did you go anywhere in particular by yourself?” He tried to find out where she had gone for the 20 minutes or so he was unable to account for her whereabouts as he recalled the previous day they had spent together.
We’re quite sure he was joking … well, kind of, but he did seem pretty serious. Then he shared how for a brief moment, he reflected on what his life would be like without the woman he met while she was filming Low Down Dirty Shame. Smith reflected on the 20 years they have been together. He started with how he watched her on “A Different World” and knew he had to have her. After all, this is the woman that let him hold her hand while she gave birth to their child. No, he actually held her foot because he wanted to see the baby come out.
Will watched Jada perform at the “Oz Fest” as the lead singer in a heavy metal band. His wife, lead singer in a heavy metal band, imagine that. “I’m so glad TMZ had it wrong,” Smith said about TMZ’s report that Jada had filed for divorce.
On that note, he called Jada Pinkett Smith up to the stage to receive her Black Girls Rock! ROCK STAR Award.
