Iggy Azalea is quite the polarizing figure in hip-hop these days. The Australian rapper has become arguably the most talked about hip-hop star of this year, but there is a lot of criticism for what some feel is her appropriation of Southern rap culture and the artifice in her rap persona. Her mentor T.I. and his wife, Tiny, have come to her defense; declaring that she writes her own raps and that her faux-Dirty South accent isn’t disrespectful or inauthentic just because it isn’t hers.
But veteran emcee Rah Digga had some choice words for Azalea. During a recent interview with ThisIs50, Rah criticized Azalea for not being herself on her records.
“Iggy Azalea, I can’t really get into her. Because it’s just not real to me,” Digga explained. The New Jersey native went on to shed light on another Australian rapper who she feels does merit more attention, and told Azalea to stop being what she’s not.
“There is a white girl from Australia that spits in an Australian accent, and her name is Chelsea Jane,” Digga shared. “That I can get into. Teach me Australian hip-hop culture. Don’t come to America and try to convince me that you’re Gangsta Boo. We’re not going to believe you if you’re trying to convince us that you’re out here trap shooting.”
