Earlier this week, President Obama predicted that the U.S. Supreme Court would eventually do away with the patchwork marriage equality happening in the U.S. and just legalize same-sex marriage across the nation. And in a recent interview, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg explained that it won’t be “a large adjustment” for America if the Supreme Court recognizes same-sex marriage as a Constitutional right.
While chatting with Bloomberg about the matter, Ginsburg explained, “The change in people’s attitudes on that issue has been enormous,” Ginsburg said. “In recent years, people have said, ‘This is the way I am.’ And others looked around, and we discovered it’s our next-door neighbor — we’re very fond of them. Or it’s our child’s best friend, or even our child. I think that as more and more people came out and said that ‘this is who I am,’ the rest of us recognized that they are one of us.”
Ginsburg then compared the different mindsets in the gay rights movement and the Civil Rights Movement.
“There was a familiarity with people. It didn’t exist in the beginning when the race problem was on the front burner, because we lived in segregated communities and it was a ‘we,’ ‘they’ kind of thing. It’s not so, I think, of the gay rights movement. So I think it would not take a large adjustment,” she explained.
Ginsburg hinted that a decision will be made about same-sex marriage this summer.
“And, of course, we shouldn’t speak much more about this subject because one way or another it will be decided before we leave town in June,” Ginsburg said.
We hope that the U.S. Supreme Court finally makes same-sex marriage legal across our nation and continues to push for greater equality and protections when it comes to the LGBT community and its diverse population.
