Stephen A. Smith never holds his tongue when it comes to his opinion on sports. Smith’s brash antics often rile up sports fans who adamantly agree or disagree with him.
While on ESPN’s “First Take,” Smith often argued that Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow had very little skills and was overrated by his fans. His thoughts on Tebow caused an uproar that led to one sports fan crossing the line.
On MLK Day, Smith retweeted a comment that was sent to him by a racist Tebow fan.
Smith responded to the nasty comment by tweeting, “Doesn’t matter how insignificant and ignorant he is. What matters is that he has an [opportunity] to spew such hatred, and that he’s allowed to NOT be accountable.”
Sports would seem like the perfect equalizer when it comes to race. Skill and ability should be the only tools that determine success when considering athletics. Unfortunately, race continues to play a role in every facet of American society.
Decades after Dr. King presented the view of an ideal world during his “I Have A Dream Speech,” race still matters. Even when it comes down to a game as simple as football. –amir shaw
