You know without a doubt that an artist is dope when Jay Z spends $20,000 on a painting. Meet Hebru Brantley, the Chicago-bred artist who turned heads at 2012’s Art Basel, and whose work continues to be revered by everyone from hip-hop’s elite to local art lovers. Describing his work as a “conscious focus on playful insight,” the Clark Atlanta University grad references pop culture icons and street artists such as Jean Michel Basquiat as inspiration for his art.

He was quoted saying: “I’m a very hard worker, and I demand a lot from those that I work with because I’m going to give them just as much. I want to express that to these kids because I feel like there’s a new way and there’s a new dynamic within this generation, and even within my generation, where you don’t want to be in a cubbyhole and stuck into a 9-to-5 sort of stigma that exists around it.”

Who has his works of art: Brantley’s pieces can be found in the homes of Jay Z, Nicki Minaj, Swizz Beatz, and more
