The numbers are in and the reign of “Empire” continues.
Fans proved they couldn’t get enough of the hit Fox drama as the March 18 two-hour season finale drew an estimated 16.7 million viewers to continue its record-breaking run of increasing its viewership in every episode since it debuted in January.
In the highly coveted 18-49 age group, the hip-hop drama managed to pull in an impressive 6.5 share. In the last decade, the only other show to come close to that feat was the first season of Shonda Rhimes’ “Grey’s Anatomy.”
The good news doesn’t end there for “Empire.”
Music from the show packaged as The Original Soundtrack from Season 1 of Empire snagged the top spot of the Billboard 200 chart after moving 130,000 units in its first week of release.
Fox has ordered 18 episodes for season two. Show co-creator Lee Daniels has already announced that Oprah and Oscar winner, Common, will make appearances when the show resumes.
